Betty Metheny Obituary

Betty Lee (Gordon) Metheny, 87, of Tunnelton, West Virginia, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Grafton, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Born on November 3, 1937, in the small community of Birdscreek, she was the daughter of the late Willie Rucker and Vesta Lynette (Pyles) Gordon. Betty lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service to others — a life that touched everyone she met. A proud graduate of Newburg High School, Class of 1955, she faithfully attended many of her class reunions over the years, always looking forward to reconnecting with dear classmates and sharing memories. Her most recent reunion, held in May of this year, was a special time of joy and reflection. Betty poured her heart into everything she did. She worked as a dedicated cook for the Preston County School System, sharing not just meals, but warmth and kindness with every student she served. She also found joy in empowering others, becoming a Mary Kay Consultant in 1975, and later serving as a compassionate CNA at Heartland of Preston County, Albert Gallatin Home Health, and Hospice Care. Her passion for caregiving never waned. Betty's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a lifelong member of the Birdscreek United Methodist Church where she taught sunday school and vacation Bible school classes, where her presence was a constant blessing to the congregation. She was also active in the Sandy Creek CEOS, and was a devoted member of the Preston County Gideon Auxiliary. Her love for the Lord was evident in every aspect of her life — from her service to her community to the gentle way she cared for her family and friends. Betty was a woman full of life and joy. She loved going to church, spending time with her family, and making memories with friends. Whether she was bowling, camping, cheering on her beloved WVU sports teams, or attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, Betty embraced every moment with enthusiasm and gratitude. Her laughter, and her steadfast love created a home and a heart that welcomed all. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Cheryl Stevens and husband Phil of Grafton; Roger Metheny and wife Kim of Reedsville; and Jerry Metheny and wife Dora of Kegley, WV. Her pride and joy extended to her grandchildren: Justin Stevens (Alexis), Ashley Bolyard (Luke), Zachary Metheny (Brittany), Meredith Hanlon (Sean), and Amy Metheny (Rob Eckenrode). Her heart was even fuller with the joy of her ten great-grandchildren: Mark, Cheyenne, Seth, Aidin, Cardin, Zadaya, Reese, Hayes, Hallie, and Lincoln; two sisters, Anna Casteel (Keith), Bruceton Mills and Carol Hyre (Charlie), Reedsville; one brother-in-law, Everett Metheny (Beverly), Short Gap, WV; and one sister-in-law, Peggy Metheny, Terra Alta, as well as several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She is now reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband of fifty-six years, Donald Duwaine Metheny, who passed in 2011, along with her brother William Harrison Gordon, and brothers-in-law, Rev. Ernest Metheny, Howard Metheny (Barbara). Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Avenue, Newburg, WV, on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and again on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Rick Bloom officiating. Betty will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Mount View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Betty’s memory to organizations close to her heart: Birdscreek United Methodist Church, c/o Jeanne Moran, PO Box 82, Newburg, WV 26410; The Gideons International, Preston County Camp, PO Box 349, Kingwood, WV 26537; or WV Caring, PO Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520.
