Donald “Don” Shaffer, 84 of Newburg, WV passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at his residence with family by his side. He was born on January 10, 1940 in Bergoo, WV, son of the late Harold Kline and Alma Jeanette (Baker) Shaffer. Don graduated from Tunnelton High School, Class of 1958. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Don worked for Greenbrier Aggregates, later Mark Marietta in Manheim doing both limestone and coal. He retired as a Process Server from the Preston County Sheriff’s office with thirteen years of service. He was owner of South Farms where he raised Longhorn cattle, horses, and chickens. His hobbies were hunting local and also in Canada where he hunted Caribou with his son Kevin. He also enjoyed fishing in his ponds, at the Great Lakes, Chesapeake Bay and while he was in Canada. He enjoyed playing baseball on several teams. He was a member of the Shay’s Chapel Church and President of the Shay’s Chapel Cemetery. Don was an honest and hardworking man, proud of his faith in God, family, and farm and will be greatly missed and leave many with heavy hearts. Don is survived by his loving wife of sixty one years, Janet Ann (Taylor) Shaffer; two sons, Gregory Kline Shaffer and Christine, Hurricane, WV, Kevin Ray Shaffer and companion, Wanda, Newburg; two grandchildren, Emma Louise Shaffer and Lauren Grace Shaffer; five siblings, Rachel Zinn and Butch, Tunnelton, Polly Whetsell and Jim, Kingwood, Faye Trickett and Gene, NY, Allen Dale Shaffer, Belington, Steve Shaffer and Beverly, Birdscreek; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by four siblings, Betty Tucker, Wanda McCloud, Joy Drew and John Shaffer. Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Ave, Newburg, WV on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm, and on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Shay’s Chapel Church from 11:00 am until time of service at 1:00 pm with Pastor Delisa Riley and Rev. Ruth Hall officiating. Interment will follow at the Shay’s Chapel Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by Preston County Honor Guard and US Army Honor Guard.
