Michael "Griz" Julien Johnson

Michael “Griz” Julien Johnson, 79 of Tunnelton, WV passed away at home on Saturday, September 9, 2023 surrounded by family and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wesley and Louella Madeline (Johnson) Menear, five siblings, Scott Menear, Janet Menear, Bobby Menear, Joe Menear and Diane Gardea. Michael is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Virginia (McGinnis) Johnson; three children and spouses, Barbara Johnson, Tina Fitchett and Robby, and Louella Wright and Cris; three grandchildren and spouses, Lisa Atkins and fiancé, Scott Wolfe, Renee Tusing and Derek, and Tommy Fitchett; seven great-grandchildren, Bristol Tusing, Hollyn Tusing, Kord Tusing, Jordan Tusing, Brooklyn Tusing, Emily Atkins and Eleanor Fitchett; six siblings and spouses, Jerry Menear and Linda, Chris Menear and Brenda, John Menear Jr and Jane, Nancy Cross, Charlotte Jenkins and Dan, and Pat Menear and Theresa; and numerous nieces and nephews, two beloved canines, Annie and Ellie, and like a daughter, Allyson. Michael grew up in a small community called Preston on Route 72, one of twelve children, learning to hunt and fish, skills used to provide for his family through out his life. A lifelong coal miner, Michael spent thirty-five years underground after proudly serving our country in both the National Guard and Army Reserves. A loving and generous family man, he never met a stranger and was always quick to offer help when needed. Michael will be greatly missed by those who’s lives he’s touched and those who loved him. In accordance to his wishes, no funeral services will be held, the family plans to hold a Celebration of Life gathering at a later date.
