Morrel Mastin Bolyard Sr., 85, of Kanetown Road, Tunnelton, WV, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026, at Bolyard Family Farm — the very land he loved and devoted his life to.
Born March 19, 1940, in Tunnelton, he was the son of the late Ernie and Rachel (Ridenour) Bolyard. Morrel was a proud graduate of Tunnelton High School, Class of 1958, and went on to work as a coal miner, retiring from Island Creek Coal Company in Bayard, WV. Yet, it was not the mines that defined him — it was the soil.
Morrel was, at heart, a farmer. The land was not just his livelihood, but his passion, his peace, and his purpose. From sunrise to sunset, he worked tirelessly, building a life rooted in hard work, dedication, and love for the simple things. Farming was the joy of his life, and he shared that joy side by side with his trusted farm partner, Rex. Together, they cultivated not just crops, but a legacy.
Known as the rock of his community, Morrel was a man who never met a stranger. His steady presence, kind heart, and willingness to lend a hand made him someone people could always count on. Whether family, friend, or neighbor, he made everyone feel welcome and valued.
He is survived by his son, Morrel Mastin Bolyard Jr. (Diane) of Tunnelton; daughters, Danita Kay Wolfe-Glotfelty (Harvey) of Grafton and Vanessa Lynn Haskiell (Ricky) of Tunnelton; eight grandchildren, Kathlene Bittinger, Dustin Travis (Kaitlyn), Emilyn Bolyard (Reno), Cody Wolfe (Stacy), Savanna Wolfe, Jason Haskiell (Ashley), Greg Haskiell (Cassondra), and Chance Haskiell (Kim); thirteen great-grandchildren; his sister, Glenna Sue Moon (Stanley); one brother-in-law, George Pase, and two sisters-in-law, Kristle Plum and Karen Sue Pase, all of Tunnelton; along with extended family, dear friends, and his loving partner, Catherine Castle; neighbor like a son, Russell Kyle (Shelby), and many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sylvia Levoy (Pase) Bolyard in 2016; his granddaughter, Dustina LeeAnn Schouwaerts; and his infant brother, Ernie Bolyard Jr.
Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Ave., Newburg, WV, on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 3:00–7:00 pm, and on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 9:00 am until the funeral service at 11:00 am with Rev. Ray Frankhouser officiating. Interment will follow at Mount View Cemetery.
Morrel’s life was a testament to hard work, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family and land. Though he may be gone, the fields he tended, the lives he touched, and the values he lived by will carry on for generations.
